Lighting problems

Question:
I have a 10000k 55 watt HO Flourescent that came in a hood over my 29 gallon.
I am only leaving it on for 8 hours a day and it is raising my tank temp. by +4 deg. Any suggestions on how to remedy? I also have a 50/50 55 watt that I can't put on for fear of turning my tank into stew.
Would it be better to raise the hoods up on risers and then have a small fan circulate air under the created gaps?
If you did raise it, how much will it detract from the tank (light intensity) if it is no longer an enclosed system (light/hood).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

If your canopy can be drilled, I would add some breather holes and see if that helps. Adding a fan would also be a plus, but ultimately you may have to build your own top - as most factory stuff just doesn't cut it for what we want/need for lighting and air flow. Keeping a 'seal' is nice and prevents jumpers, etc and makes for a better looking tank - but fitting everything in, is another story.

Hi,
I would goto radio shack and pick up some cooling fans ( like for computers ), they are easy to install and will keeps things cooler for you.
