i have a 90 gallon fish only tank right now w/ a glass top to hold my piece of .... lights and wood canopy over it. 4 1/2" space between the glass top and canopy. i want to start a reef tank but i cant find the right lighting. i want to keep my wood canopy but the only light i can find that you can use a wood canopy is the sundial but it has a height of 7" w/ the legs and they say you cant put them directly on the glass top. any suggestions. please help.

First off you are going to want to get rid of the glass top. Secondly if you only have 4.5" of space you are going to have troubles with any light you get and trying to keep space between the light and the water.
Retrofit will mount in your canopy, but even those need some space.
You might want to think about a new hood/canopy or at least an alteration to it, so that you have a little more space.

I don't think you can keep any metal halide lights (even retro fit kits) with that canopy as there will be a lot of heat issues. You might be able to keep some power compacts or t5 retrofit kits which can hook to your canopy for your tank. But you need to get a couple of exhaust fans to keep it cool.
