Lighting questions

We are starting a 2.5 gal Nano reef, something for me to "dote" over, until we decide to take the jump to a larger setup, which I am really interested in doing down the line. Right now, I was wondering about lighting. What kind of light is needed? All we have in there is a live rock right now, and black marine sand. The hood that came with the tank is on it, and it had a regular light. (not flourcent or anything like that) What do y'all think?

Are you saying the lighting you have now is not fluorescent? I was under the impression that fluorescent lighting pretty much comes standard. I'm no lighting expert, but I'm just trying to clarify so I could maybe do some research to help you out a bit. :)

Some come with just a regular bulb. It's okay for the cycle period, but get at least a florescent fixture before you add any coral. :D

yup, it's NOT florescent it came with a regular bulb, but i was reading that I can find a mini compact light that will screw in there. The tank was not really meant for salt water, I think. It is a Minibow 2.5, by AllGlass aquariums. Looks kool, I hope we can get it to work. I am just afraid something isn't going to go right, since I cannot test for amonia, 'trates and 'trites right now beacuse of the lack of the testing supplies.

Oh wow...I had no idea they'd try selling aquariums with a regular light. Learn something new everyday! The mini compact light sounds like an excellent idea. :)

If you go to the All-Glass aquarium website, you'll see the tank we have. It's a MiniBow 2.5. It was a present for our daughter's second birthday. I'll add a pic, it's not the best because I don't have that great of a camera, but you'll at least get the idea.

How cute! And a Nemo background to boot. I bet your daughter is loving it already. :)

LOL yes, she does. For all intensive purposes, she thinks that Nemo in the background IS her real fishy...LOL Nemo and Elmo are her "men", and since Elmo doesn't look right in a tank...LOL:cheer: :D
