Lighting?
Hey Guys
I have a 38 gallon tank that is 36" x 12" x 20" and I wanted to have a well-balanced lighting for it. I plan to keep mostly LPS and a few SPS frags in the future when the tank matures. I was thinking of going with three 96-watt pc bulbs. How many k’s would you suggest? I want a natural looking effect. If this were your tank, what lighting would you use? I was considering halides but my canopy is close to the water (about 5 1/2" above the water) and I was thinking that the temp could be a problem.
Any and all replies would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff

If it were me, I would use the 10,000K and supplement it with actinics. From what I have read, if you want the best lighting, use MH, but you should be OK with the PCs.
Hopefully a few sharks will chime in.

Well I think that if it were my tank and i was going to go all out - i'd build a canopy to raise the bulbs and go MH with a pc actinic suppliment. I'd throw in a fan or 2 to control the temps. Just my .02

On that size tank pc's would be fine.....I'd go with 2 10k's and 1 actinic....I've never used them(my actinics are vho) but I understand that there is a true actinic pc available. With that much pc light over your system you should be set to go.

Thanks guys
I have chosen to go with the 3-96watt pc’s. I will buy the two white 10,000ks and one 96-watt blue.
Thanks again

Hi,
Hope I got you in time not to buy the blue bulbs. Get the 03 actinics from hello lights. Very close if not exactly the same as VHO. Or get them from SWF if they sell them. Didn't mean to step on toes round here.

josh why not the drk blue bulbs i noticed on like ahsupply they use drk blue to describe thier antinic bulbs. ive been having my own lighting problems on a 55long i think ive just about decided on 4 55w pcs i was going to go with 440w vho from hellolights.com but i recieved an email saying that the bulbs should be replaced after 6-8 months and this would be too pricy for me so i think ill stick with pc's
