the biggest difference is color tempature. They function in a similar manner using electricity to excite different gases. Sodiums burn mor in a red yellow sround 3K color temp and they may contain other eleent( typical mercury) that can broaden thier spectrum
MH basically burn mor to blue again depending on the elements within for 10 to 20 K
Sodium is good for alot of Hydroponics not reef keeping

Both are what is called HID lighting (High Intensity Discharge). HPS has more lumens that other HID lamps. The color is more orange than blue. It has been said that the unnatual color of the HPS lamps has psyhcolgical effects on humans from long term exposure. I wasn't aware HPS were being used in this hobby.
