Just got a new 120 gal aquarium. Bought a light from the store, it is six light and is about 12 inches wide, associate said it would be big enough but it only cover half of the tank. Does this sound right or should I get at least another one?

Gonna need a lil more info, such as what is the length of the tank and light, what type of light is it- PC lighting, HO T5, led, or metal halide, and finally what type of tank do you want?

The tank is 4 ft long 2 ft wide. Maybe a little more, the light is four ft long and maybe twelve inches wide. It is a t5 with six bulbs. And I have a reef. Had a 55 for many year and just moved everything com it to the 120.

That's an ok light for mushrooms and polyps with lps up top, but for sps and anemones I would put some more light on the tank IMHO.
