I have a 55g FO tank my water is in perfect condition but i continue to get only brown algae. I dont mind getting green algae but I hear brown algea means something is not right with the tank. I have had my tank for 1 year now. Im wondering if it is the light. How long does my light usually last or how often should they be changed. I have a 40W power-glo.

A tear on a bulb is pushing it.You should replace them about 6-9months MAX. How about Phosphates?? How long are the lights on per day?? these also are major causes of algae. Also nitrates.

Thanks Mr. Salty for answering my question. My lights are on 6-8 hrs a day but i get direct light from a window. I need to check my phosphates. But why is it brown instead of green?

It is recommended that "no" direct sunlight be allowed to hit a fish tank. This can cause an outbreak of algae(and not the green type).
