***lights For My Tank ??? ***

:help: Please help....I have a 75 gallon with live rock, and I'm a bit confused when it comes to what kind of lights to use in my tank. I heard that florecent lights are a waste of money and they don't help your live rock grow much. I heard that halogen lights are the best lighting sorce but expensive and put off alot of heat which requires a fan.
I'm also confused about, do I need to worry about the Watts or the Lumines that each bulb has.
I want my rock to grow purple and I've used purple up but nothing has happend. Could it be my lights. I have 48" florecent light 2 bulbs- blue and white 40 each watt. Is this the correct lighting I should have for this tank? It does not sound like it....Please help me figure this out...thanks for all of your help everyone!

BTW, i think you meant halide, not halogen. i jsut didnt want you going into a lowes or something and buying a halogen bulb because you wont be able to find a good color and they get a heck of a lot hotter than a halide ever.
are you looking to keep any corals? or jsut looking for coraline algae to grow? coraline will grow under good tank conditions with NO florecent, but it it a heck of a lot less likely. if you are jsut lookking for the brightest lights, iw ould get t5s. they are great lights, and visualy the brightest IMO, although the PAR isnt as great as halides. but with a good fixture, youw ill still be able to keep alot of corals if you eventualy decide to go that route.
PS: IMO, dont bother with purple up. it is jsut a Ca and trave element suplliment and should only be used when tested ingrediants are low.
