Lights From Homedepot?

Can I buy flourescent lights from HD instead of LFS? I'm going to build a canopy for a tank I'm building and will probably do the wiring myself. Can I use their lights and what should I look for?
Also..had anyone built their own canopy and wired it themselves? If you have, chime in because I have a couple questions.

cool...that's good to know. My tank is about half way done being built (I'll be done tomorrow) so I'll want to start the canopy and wiring.
Did you wire it yourself at all?

I never heard such as buying lights for salt tank at HD. Are we talking something special or just ordinary fixture and ballast. I guess Lowes would work too.

How hard was it to wire? I'm pretty good with electrics and feel I can easly get this done. When I finish with the tank (or if I get bored later tonight) I'll write up the schematics for the wiring.
I want to add some switches to the top and a built in timer as well as adding a pump to the wiring mix.
I'll write it up (prob tonight...god I'm bored...) and you'll understand what I mean.

Yeah...had nothing better to do.
This is rough, and not very specific for wiring, but you get the idea of what I'm trying to do. EASILY done. I just hope it will all fit and look nicely.

I see on your schematic that you are branching several Items from one feed. Namely, "110 from wall". With the lights, skimmer, and especially the heater, a lot of "juice" will be flowing through that circuit.
This will be especially pronounced if your tank circuit is at the end of a long run (from your panel or fuse panel) or if the same circuit has the TV on it.
Later on when you add MH or VHO you will run a very real risk of over loaded wires and a potential for a fire hazard.
Make sure on the "110 from wall" that you dont use something like 16-18gauge braided lamp cord. Use 14 or 12gauge wire... I used 12/2 and 14/3 Romex! LOL
The ballasts from your hardware store will work just fine if they are rated for the bulb that you're powering.
I bought 2 x2 bulb shop lights and rewired them so that the lights come on "lower or upper" I have my actinics on the bottom and the aquasun on top. It is pretty cool, I can turn off the MH in the evening, and have my aquasuns on for viewing, turn them off and have a "twilight" period for the fishies.

Yeah...I planned on using pretty thick wire for it. Right now I have basically all that running on an extension cord (indoor cord) and it's working fine. I'll be using a wire thicker than on this one when I do it.
Since I'm not wanting to have corals (I'll be going to college in 6 months and it'll be alot more work than I want for that), I doubt I'll ever upgrade the lighting on this tank.
Quick question...how can I convert 110volt AC to 12volt DC? Like a car battery...
I have a 12vt DC fan I want to use for cooling, but am not sure how I could wire that.

wait a minute.. so you can actually use the homedepot hood thingy and just add florcents lightbulbs to it? just like that? or do i have to do something specific?

If your talking about the cheap bulbs from HD they won't work well. They will light your tank with no problem but on a tank the light look very yellow. Not only will they not make the colors of your fish look good but they will grow algae like crazy! I tried the GE sunlight bulb even and I had algae running wild in my tank. I switched to 10,000 and 20,000K bulbs and don't have that problem anymore.

acutally talking about the hood itself, like if i went to homedepot and bought a hood for it and just switched the light bulbs... would that work?
would anything go wrong? we got 40 lbs of live rock

Well I'm far from an expert here but I want to throw in some thoughts to clarify what's been said so far on this thread. The orignal question was "can I use lights from Home Depot instead of buying them at my LFS?" the answer is a very simple yes. Now, there are several things to keep in mind here. The lights you're buying from HD are Normal Output (NO), assuming that the lights you're comparing them to at the LFS are also NO lights than you're comparing apples to apples and you can certainly save a lot of money building your own hood and installing HD lights. IF you're looking at either Very High Output (VHO) or Compact Flourescent lights at the LFS then you're not going to find them at HD (although you can sometimes find VHO ballasts there). In greatly oversimplified terms, the major difference is the number of watts of light you can fit in a given amount of space. A 48" NO bulb puts out 40 watts of light, a 36" compact flourescent puts out 95 watts using "roughly" the same amount of space and a 48" VHO puts out 110 watts of light, lastly although not discussed here yet, you could fit 2 - 3 Metal Halide lights in the same space and get up to 3,000 watts of light in that space.
With all that being said, most people agree that, in this day and age, NO lights are not a cost effective way to light anything except a FO tank, and a fairly small tank at that.
All of the above just reflect my observations of many discussions on this subject and I'm sure there are many who will disagree. I only jumped in here because I didn't want a newbie to jump to the mistaken opinion that a $25 strip light from Home Depot would yield the same results as a $500 Mh / Power Compact hood from XYZ.com.
Just my babbling on a boring Monday morning,
Paul

Alright...from reading your reply, melbourne, I'm going to build the setup w/ HD parts, but use LFS bulbs.
Anything on converting 110volt AC into 12volt DC?

Uust pick up an adapter from Radio Shack, or, if you're not electrically "challenged" LOL, pick up a transformer with enough amps and build one yourself, or, worst case, buy a computer power supply and find the twelve volt lead and tap off it :D
HTH
Later,

Heh...yeah, I thought about the computer power supply, but that would be SUCH a waste! I'll just try to make my own. Wish me luck!

Picked up a complete 2x48" shop light at Lowes for $9.00. If I only get a year out of the fixture I'll still be happy. Even the cheapist "aquarium" fixtures would have to last 10+ years to balance out. I agree about the bulbs though. Even their full spectrum 'sun' lights leave a lot to be desired. Need the LFS lights.
Good Luck!
