I have a 90 gal FOWLR and I purchased a Black V Lionfish (about 5 in dia) and was thinking of other tank mates. I was talking to LFS and they said that I shouldn't put a H tusk in with it becuase it would be lunch when the lion gets bigger...is this true????? If so any other suggestions on one or two more tank mates... ( excluding any type of eels.) the LFS also said I should get two more lions instead becuase they are pack hunters....any truth to this??? any suggestions welcomed...

Tuskfish make very good tankmates for lions and it's doubtful even a full grown volitans could eat a tusk, unless it was a tiny juvenile. I wouldn't consider adding any more large fish to your system. The lion, when full grown will probably be a bit cramped in a 90 gallon tank. While they do hunt in packs, having more than one won't allow much room for them to move around, let alone exhibit any type of this behavior.

A lion and a tusk should be fine together, but IMO, that would about max out a 90 gallon. I'm kinda weird about bioloads:joy: I have a 150 with just a V. lion in it and will add another V. lion and a tusk or grouper in the future.

If you do get a tusk, look for an Australian specimen. They're a bit hardier than their Indonesian counterparts (and usually net caught as well.) A lion and tusk will be fine in a 90g together. When the tusk gets larger, keep an eye on him though. He may nip at the lion's fins. Bo

Triggers should be fine as well as an eel just have plenty of rock work for them to hide in.

Well thanks...that confirms my Tusk idea. I will be getting a tusk and I was looking for the Australian one due to color. I wasn't going to put anything else in the tank just a couple nice fish. thanks again.

Australian tusks are the better ones...the only reason i wouldnt get a tusk is not cuz of the lion hurtin the tusk..but the tusk hurting the lion. I have a tsuk in with a v lion, and wen the tusk gets excited at feeding time, it sees the lions fins and nips at em...removed a good chunk the other day. Otherwiese, the lion would never be able to eat one, cuz they are too quick.
