Just curious.
Seeing as how there spines are poisonous I was wondering how the LFS caught these fish and how did you get them home and into you tank? Is there a special container that is used for there transportation?
Also if you were to come into contact with there spines what would the effect be?
Just curious, thanks.

I don't have my lionfish now :( , but when we got him the guy just scooped him up with a net, he said it usualy doesn't get caught. He put him in a plastic bag with the water, and put him in a brown paper bag. They don't need a special container, but I amagine the larger ones do.

I have 3 lions. All of them were put into bags. They did double bag them however. Then again, I bought all mine as juvi's so they weren't much of a threat as far as breaking the bag open. They do as most other fish and just kinda stay still during transportation (not a whole lot of room).
As for the stinging part. I had a friend get stung and he said it was like he got hit on the hand with a hammer except the pain lasted hours. Then they called the pet stores, poison control, and doctors and pretty much got word to just keep an eye on it and if he has a reaction to come into the emergency room. Unless you are a infant or baby then I don't think it can kill you unless you have an anaphylactic reaction to it (stops your breathing) kinda like a bee sting reaction but worse, then you are in trouble. But what his did was just turned into those blistery water sacs on his hand where the needles went in. Kinda like when someone burns there skin and gets a blister. There were like 3 blisters. But the first day it was swollen up throughout his whole hand up to his wrist.

Forgot to say, no one should catch these fish with a net. You should use a net to guide them into a plastic container of some sort. I used a gallon water bottle (like a milk jug) and cut the top off and followed behind them with a net until they went in the jug. It's real easy and they usually go in right away. Using a net can be very harmful. I've seen lions stuck in nets and if they panic and move morre then it can get real ugly. Using a container like I said avoids any contact to the fish and is alot less stressful on any fish. Don't use nets at all. Just my opinion. Take care

Yikes! I'm not in any hurry to get a lionfish. Funny thing my lfs guy said...he was stung once by a lionfish and he said "one can never experience pain worse than that..." I asked HIM "have you ever given birth?!" :D
Where in Ohio are you skirk?
