Little Giant

I think I have my sump pretty much planned ( homemade) now I am looking for a pump. I know my over flow is rated at 800 ( I have a 125 tank ) I have 2 questions. Should I go a higher over flow ( that is about 7.5 times my tank ) also is there flow control on the motor itself or would I have to put in a valve to control the flow...??
I am looking at a 3mdqx-sc flows 1000 at 3 feet and 810 at 6
Thanks

Hey Rap,
I gotta say before people bag on you about the pump that I had used the 'Q' series Little Giant for years and they work great. As long as you stick with the 'Q' they are pretty quiet. Iwaki seems to be the preferred around here and you should definately look at those too. Your call in the end.
The Little Giant does not have flow control. So you will need a ball valve. Since you have a big tank I think it is safe to say you won't be going bigger needing a bigger pump, so I would get a pump close to the optimum flow. That way you won't have to restrict it much causing heat in the tank.

Matt,
Thanks for the input. I looked at the Iwaki. Little Giant had a flow pretty close to the CPR over flow so I wouldn't have to restrict the flow as bad. Closest I could find on the Iwa was about 960 at 4 feet. My options are pretty much open, I do want to make sure I get a decent one because I don't want to mess with all of this all over again.
Thanks for the input.

Cool. Sounds like a plan.
A 125 heh? I am jealous. I am in between tanks right now (and very broke) and trying to stay sharp here. But reading about all this great stuff is killing me!

Yea the 125 is sitting empty right now. I only have my 55 running and my 30 ( Q. tank ). I decided I didn't like how it was set up so I tore it down and started my 55 and now the GF wants it in the living room. So now I have to move it. Sitting with a 125 empty is no fun ( pout ) I know the money deal. And now since I gave her a ring i am sure money flow will slow down even more.. better hurry up and get it done... <smirk>

Hey Rap,
By the way, I don't know if you ever had an external pump before, but regardless of what brand you get they are much louder than the submersible ones.
What I did to counter this was buy bed foam, I don't know what it is really called but it is the foam pad that goes on top of the mattress, and cut it to shape. I lined the ******** of my stand with it.
It worked really really well and it is cheap.

No I have never had one.. that sounds like a good Idea. But wont the heat off the motor melt that? I am going to put that stuff under my tank between the tank and the stand for some cusion. I could put it in the stand but I am alittle nervous about heat with the motor. Is that an issue?

No it won't melt it. It shouldn't be touching it anyway. My stand was mostly open near the back which helped vent. You should have a vent, to have some air flow.

Well change of plans now...I cant cut a hole in the side of the rubbermaid because it isnt flush.. So I will have to use an internal or would plumbing pvc down into the sump and to the pump then up if that works... Does it?

Do you know I can find a website for their specs on their pumps.....??? I heard Rio I want to stay away from.... I have to go up about 4 feet and I will have 2 90 degree angles with an ext pump and 3 90's with an internal
