little neck clams

I have read quite alot on these here on the web site but I was wondering, how to keep them alive. I bought four, put them in, one lived. Bought eight more, lost all eight. What is the key? Some say to burp, some say not necessary. The first four I didn't, the second set, I put in a bowl of salt water for about 20 minutes. Don't know if they burped or not. Not sure how to tell if they did.

They are all cold water clams. Unless you use a chiller to keep the water under 60F, they are not going to survive. Also, if you want to save money, go buy them in a supermarket that carries "live clams". That way they only cost about 20 cents instead of $3-4 apiece.
