little white spots

My yellow tang has little white spots on the edges of his pectoral fins. One on each side in almost exactly the same place. I questioned the lfs where I bought it from, to see if it was ICK. He told me that marine ick is black, not white and not to worry about it. There is no visible damage to either fin. Now the tang looks as if he has scraped whatever it was off from one side, but it still remains on the other side. Any ideas??
Thanks in advance

The LFS is (once again) wrong, marine ich is just like the freshwater ich, white spots. What your tang has sounds kinda like ich but I don't know for sure, did the spots look like a grain of sand or were they larger spots?

larger than a grain of sand, but now the other side is gone. The tang scraped off whatever it was on the live rock in the tank. I have been feeding the tang with food soaked in garlic.
