If you can get saltwater feeders, those would obviously be the best. But if you want to use freshwater feeders, best I can say is try to limit it as much as possible, if not just avoid. They are really unhealthy for any length of continued use. You certainly can spoil your lion into eating only live from feeding live too much. I know some people who will buy their Lionfish as Betta for Christmas once a year.
I thought I was the only one who treated their lionfish to a Betta (or Beta, like they say at *****) at Christmas.
Some folks think feeding live feeders, even once in a while, can make it impossible to get them back on dead foods. This hasn't been my experience, and some people will stone me for saying it; but I think an occasional live feeder is OK. Watching them hunt is incredible. A big problem with FW feeders is that they are very fatty and a lot of them can lead to fatty deposits that can kill a SW fish. If you have to go to a lot of trouble getting the lion back on its regular diet after a live treat, I sure wouldn't do it again. After a live meal, i wait several days before feeding them again and have never had a problem. BTW, mollies are probably the safest feeder, being a brackish water species. Damsels are great too
