Live Rock and Sand

What are the benefits or reason for live sand? Is it a food source? Also what is the best way to introduce rock and sand into a new set up?

A "LIVE sand" bed,especially if it is at least 4" deep,actually finishes out the nitrogen cycle.
That is that it converts nitrates into nitrogen gas that then escapes the water by tiny bubbles.

Live sand also contains a lot of bacteria wich will help to cycle a new tank a little quicker!.
