Its my understanding that LR doesn't require cleaning like the bio balls do. If the balls go uncleaned for a long period of time they can produce a lot of nitrates.
I wish I could give more info, but I am in the process of swapping out the bio balls now. If you need a deciding factor to go LR, try pulling out all of the bio balls and then think that you would have to do that once or twice a month. It is enough hassle to justify switching.

LR rubble is very cheap as well, I got 2 pounds to fit in the back of my 14 gallon bio cube for about $10! Hope that helps

Ok, so I have had my Nanocube 24 for alomost a year now. Everything has been great, but I was thinking that the filter and bio balls are probably needing a cleanning. Could someone tell me that it will be ok to take everything out and replace with LR, or would this be a bad idea. Any suggestions would be Great! Thanks

From what I've read is to cure your LR and add some live rock and then remove some of the bio balls. ANd keep doing this until all the bio balls are replaced.

lr doesn't need light, I had that same question and Demartini told me it didn't and my system so far is running pretty well.
