I have always read that you should have 1 lb of LR for every gallon in your tank. So ideally you should have 150 lbs of LR. I have a 55 gallon and I have 90+ lbs of LR.
This is just an opinion; I am not really disagreeing because what you say is the rule of thumb.
It is really hard to say one pound for every gallon because it really depends on the type of rock. For example Fiji rock, what I have is very light but takes up allot of room. So 70lbs in my 90g is allot. Base rock is very heavy and the same poundage looks very different.
So this is what I go by: The fish should have room to swim in and out of the rock work; Space should be between the rock and glass enough to clean it with a mag float. If you want coral, make some overhangs and a cave so you can keep a variety. I would say rock should reach at least a little more than halfway up the tank, but not all the way so your power heads can move the water unobstructed..
