If the rock is out of water completely, then it would be better just to put it in the water.
If you have a whole lot of life on that rock, you may want to consider cycling a different way than many people suggest. YOu can do continual water changes during the cycle to preserve the life on the rock. I believe it will take you longer to cycle this way, but you will preserve a lot more life.

You got the rock at 8:31...??
It will definetly NOT be done cycling at 8:42...
Keep testing (once a day) check tommorrow...
And be patient...grasshopper...it's all good.

Sorry dude, reread the post...your saying the TANK is almost done cycling before you added the rock...got it.
Byt you still need to watch for an aditional Ammonia "bump" now that you added the rock.
It's all good...:D

It is probably too late for you now...but in the future if you prepare a solution of about 1.035 to 1.04 salinity with proper temp..you submerse the new rock into it for a few minutes...most inverts will try to evacuate the rock giving you a chance to pick through, and place the ones you want to keep into a better solution while the rock cures...

I set this tank up to grow coraline on, those are my futur rocks, most of them are Coral skelotons, and all of them are ones that i took from the ocean.
Dont worry i washed them so much!

UH OH!!! i just got home from school, and looked at my rock, then in a little crack and there is a crab, i dont know what type it is, but i read in this post area that there are some crabs that will kill your hermits and snails, and i dont want all my hermits and snails dead, sence they WERE free. It might just be an emerald crab, they had 3 of them in the tank were i was buying the rock, havent really gotten a good look at it.
