Live Rock or Live dead coral

The topshelf live rock at my lfs looks like pieces of dead coral not rock , is that what it is ? Also should I worry about keeping my tanks lighted at all times while it is cycling (for live rock regeneration)...

Will keeping the light on 24 hours a day hurt anything?

it would probably give you algae problems, and will not help much anyhow, just a couple of hours a day
