just make sure that LR is SUPER DUPER CURED. or else you might see a nitrate spike.

so would that be by smelling it only? or are there other techniques involved? thanks btw

if you order it from online it's not technically "cured" as you will have a decent amount of die off due to shipping... So i Wouldn't add it to your tank regardless

I agree with sw65galma. Any rock ordered online, reguardless of shipping method, will have die off during shipment so will then in turn create a mini-cycle if introduced into an established tank. Cycle it in a seperate container for a few weeks and then place it in your tank. You will be happy you did.

Kinda off topic from the orginal question, but can someone give me an idea of how much 12lbs of LR looks like from this site? I know it totally varies depending on the rock, but a ballpark idea would suffice
What I mean is like how many rocks are we talking? Relative size, etc?

i have purchase 2 batches from this site in the past month . when it arrives it defintely needs to be brushed and cured for at least a week. when it comes it still has mud and loose pieces. i just started a batch this past wednsday and today it looks great already has that good ocean smell. i have been testing it and i still haven't seen a spike yet. 12 lbs. is about 4-6 pieces if i were you i would go for 20lbs. in this pic it is 20lbs. $109.00

what would be a better option? get live rock online but still cure it or get the live rock from my LFS? it's a little more expensive there but the guy that i know says they cure they're live rock, he even said he'll go thru the rocks with me and pick out good ones and let me smell it if they aren't cured. should i just get the rock from my lfs? if already cured?

I chose to go with LR from LFS at $8 a lb. JUST because I could add it instantly, had wonderful coraline and all good stuff. I think it's worth it. If you have it shipped to you, no coraline or very little and you have to cure it.

Thanks sandman, that gives me a much better idea of what I'd be getting. Do they have alot of coraline on them or not really? What are you using to cure them. Is that just a power head in there?

yea it has a little green coraline but the last batch that is in my display aquarium now didn't take long to get some of that good purple coraline on it. hot883 has some nice looking pieces . it probably depends on the lighting you have. i do have a powerhead and a heater in the tub with the batch in the pic above. i buy it from this sight because my lfs has been a little low on his live rock inventory he said business has been slow so he hasn't been able to stock like he used to . i would go to him if he had some so you can get a look at what your going to buy first.
