FIJI is not a low grade rock.
yes they have some thats better then others but it sounds like he is only bashing things he does not sell. which if true would be a good reason to find another LFS

In my opinion, Fiji is a low grade rock.
Never heard of that particular type of rock - but you can look up the name on google and see it's a pretty popular divesite.
It's all really up to you looking at the rock itself. You ask us if it's good - take a look and let us know :)

You have to look at the rock. How does it look? I wouldn't pay extra just because the guys said it was high grade. The way the rock is handled priored to getting to you can effect the cost. How does the rock look for life forms? Check out the batch. It may look good, it may not. If it looks crappy, wait for better or go to another store...
There are good pieces of Fiji and bad pieces as is the cases with all types....
Make the guy weigh out the rock. You want rock that isn't dense. Rock that takes up space, has cool shapes, but doesn't weigh a ton...I got some Fiji the other day that looks like "Marshall island" and isn't very dense at all. i just went through about 200lbs and found the best pieces. I made the guy weigh out every piece I pulled out to find the most porous...

Where the rock comes from has NO affect on quality. Quality is situational on individual pieces and how well they were shipped.
The only thing that region affects in live rock on a general basis is shape, types of hitchikers, and to a very small degree, type of growth.
It is all a matter of opinion. The have awsome-shaped rocks at a lfs near me for $10 a pound. They are shaped like pretrifed wood, yet they are not porous , so would not contribute much to water quality.
There is anothr lfs near me with $4 per pound rock that is shaped like small boulders and rocks, but they are very porous and great for water filtration.
One person might like the 1st rock for its shape, another person might prefer the second rock for its funtion. However, one guy selling a rock from fiji might have better quality than someone selling tonga rock one day, and the next day it may be vice versa.
:) :)
