I have added some not so 'live' rock to my tank with a very live rock in it. Does the base rock need to be touching the LR for it to spread? And how long will it take, thanks.

It does not need to be touching, but stacking the live rock on top of the base rock will speed up the processes. It may take a couple of weeks before you notice any critters on you base rock and it could take up to a few months before your base rocks looks identical to your live rock. It ultimately depends on the tank and chemistry of your tank.
