Ok, after some hard times getting the rockwork the way I want it, I have decided to create a layout to help guide me. What do you think? Does this look ok. Well, I guess it will in the actual tank

The only thing is it's a little specific. I used to use paint to get a general idea as well, more like if I like a big central mount, a 2 island setup, etc. The chances of actual rock matching are next to impossible, but as long as you keep that in mind and are just going for a general design, high in the center, sloping down to the outside, big cave up top, etc, should have a good time

Only thing I could tell you is that you could lay out your dimensions of your tank on the floor and before you put the rock in the tank you could lay it in the same area on the floor. This could help you not get to close to the sides as well as get you some ideas of how it will stack.
Really though, like stated above, its gonna change on you no matter the plan.

Yeah it's nice to get an idea of what you might like before you start building but it will be difficult to produce an exact replica because of the shapes of the rocks. I have always just started rearanging rocks to see what seems to fit and look the best. I have also got to a point where I know what I want but just don't have the right rock so that is when I start cruising the LFSs for the right piece. It has worked most of the time and when it doesn't, I just have to rethink what I am trying to build and work with the rock I currently have.

Try putting your rocks in a semicircle with the beginning of the semicircle close to the front and ending with the semicircle also at the front this will give your tank some feeling of depth
