live rock

i have a 12 gallon aquapd. the temp. and salinity are both stable, and so far all i have in it is live sand. i want to put in live rock tomorrow but im really tight on money. i was wondering rather than getting 12 lbs of live rock would i be able to get only about 8 lbs of live rock? if i did that i would get natural reef rock ( not live) also. would that rock eventually turn into live rock? the other reason i wanted the reef rock(not live) is because the like rock at my lfs doesnt have a whole lot of shape to it. thanks :help:

im not really sure what you asking. But in order for you to make just a regualar rock "live" and have to have some LR to seed it. So you could get some rock and then get some realy live rock and it will make the other rock "live"
