Please don't take this the wrong way, but you may want to check out the recent posting about this very thing. The post is titled:

the purple is coraline algae , and ifyou have lr, it will eventually grow, it comes in purple red and green i think(those are the 3 colors i have) and an off whitish shed of greenor yellow, maybe even more colors
as it grows and or dies it will look almost like a white slimey hard covering most times
