You will be running the risk of getting something in your tank you don't want like NO3, PO4, pollution, parasites, dinoflagelents, pest, and or the eggs or larval stages of other unwanted critters that will mature in your tank. That being said, most people get away with it if they collect it from an area free of pollution and high nutrients. Never take it from an area near a river mouth, boat port or launch, ocean inlet or near an area with alot of human traffic. And make sure it's legal to remove from the area in question. At many of our local beaches and in some off shore areas it is illegal to remove the sand due to local erosion problems or beach replenishment projects. If you choose to take the risk, Good Luck!
I live 10 miles from the beach/ocean and won't use it, I buy dead for 2-4 dollars and seed it with LS and or sand booster/detravor kit.
