ok this is a biggie,,, make sure you add saltwater to the live sand,, i screwed up and added freshwater (hey the ***** guy said add water, didnt say what kind) freshwater shocks and pretty much kills the sand...big ass no no!!!!! its expensive, and i wasted $80.oo on 2 bags and then killed it,, i emptied my tank, left in the sand , i added saltwater, but it was too late now my water is toxic!! and i have fish in it,,,not good.....death has begun... <img src="graemlins//yell.gif" border="0" alt="[yell]" />

Hi Jester.
Ls and lr are very beneficial for your tank. They have organisms and bacteria that will help break down your ammonia, nitrite and nitrates, thus helps your tank to cycle faster and is more natural. There are tons of critters that love the sand and burrow down it to make homes and feed off of. The ls also is a good ph buffering system, will help keep the ph where it should be......a wise choice among aquarists... ;)

Live sand picks up where all other filtration stops.
Waste-Ammonia-Nitrite-Nitrate- this is where the aquarist must step in and do a good sizeable water change to reduce nitrates. The DSB has low oxygen areas that convert the nitrates to nitrogen bubbles that float to the top and burst, releasing the gas into the air.
I had nitrates over 40ppm constantly until I removed the CC, and put in 3+ inches of sand(60 lbs. live, 30 lbs. dry aragonite). Haven't had a trace since :D A good DSB is moey very well spent, IMO.
