i know live sand is better, but what is the differents and can I just use plain sand and get the same outcome. If not what can happen from using plain sand from lfs.

you can use non-live sand just fine thats what i used no big deal. obviously live sand will cycle your tank faster and have good things in it but its not necessary.

with so called pre packaged live sand like caribsea aragalive/ocean direct you will get the EXACT same results with virtually no benefits other than possibly a quicker cycle. REAL live sand like what they sell here has micro fauna, worms and organisms that help clean the sand, feed corals with larvae and help sustain hard to keep fish that feed on micro fauna such as dragonets, fang blennies and sand sifting gobies. the difference between REAL live sand is the same difference between starting with dry rock vs live rock. even REAL live sand isn't worth it unless you have a reef tank and particularly a deep sand bed where the organism's keep the top layers from remaining stagnant.
