Live sand

I am setting up a 125g tank and want to put live sand down. I will be getting about 100 lbs. of live. The rest will be regular sand, my question is, what kind of other sand do I use? Where can I get the regular sand? Also is 3 inches enough?

i think that the white or tanish coloed sand wouldent be that bad, however if you do use it, make sure that you clean it out VERY VERY VERY good and mix it well with the sand you have, also i think 3 inches would be okay however i think most would agree that you want to shoot for about 4 to 6 inches(i think 4 is enough for me though)

I only have about 2 to 2 1/2 inches of sand in mine. you can go more if you want. just make sure you have lots of circulation and lots of clean up crew for the bottom. so you dont have dead spots. I had bought that natures ocean sand in bags of 20 Lb's. each, you dont have to rinse that kind.

If you have a HD near you they should carry southdown sand. This is the cheapest sand I've found that is okay for a tank, that isn't found at your lfs. No others have been recommended. Around here it is $4 for 50lbs. You can buy the same stuff at your lfs for nearly ten times the price.

You could use Aragamax(oolite)dry sand. If you are buying alot, your lfs might give you a discount. A got 3-30lbs bags from my lfs for $20 a piece. DO NOT RINSE THE SAND! Just put it in the tank. There is no need to rinse it. You actually want the different particle sizes. And yes you want to shoot for at least a 4" sand bed. HTH--Bob
