It is sand that is mostly collected far from the shore in the ocean. It contains many types of bacteria that aid in converting fish waste/ammonia into nitrites, and nitrites into nitrates.A deep sand bed(more than 4")will take this cycle one step further and turn nitrates into harmless nitrogen gas that escapes the sandbed through bubbles.Live sand can usually be bought at your local fish stores.Ask for Natures Ocean brand. This brand is also avalible here at swfish.com's online store...It is pacaged in a sealed plastic bag with water in it.And has a shelf life of about 9 months...
