Yes, it helps keep the nitrates down, and IMO I think it looks nicer.

Get a good DSB with some LS to seed it, and that should work out fine. The DSB should be 4-5" deep, and the LS will help it in developing, etc. It looks so much nicer, and is much easier to maintain, just put in a clean-up crew. With CC you have to vacuum it(siphon), lol, and it is not as pretty. I switched to one exactly one week ago, and I haven't been able to take my eyes off of the tank, it's just too hard. HTH
