live sand

Great page! I am setting up a brand new 55 gallon reef tank. I've ordered my live rock & now I'm wondering if I should've added the sand first. I've read that you can add your sand bed after the rock is in place...is this true? How long do I need to wait after I set up my rock to add live sand? Thanks....groucheux

Place LR right on the glass, the when you get the sand, spread it up to & around the rock. Good luck & remember to go SLOW! Get your critter package next to stir stand & keep algae in check!

Could you put your sand in, then live rock on some kind of platform, like cut pvc pipes, or is it best to but the live rock directly on the glass bottom?

That'll work too! You need good water circulation under the rock. I cut up a plastic milk crate for a base for my LR. It lifted the rock about 1/2" then spread the sand in. Works great. Starfish & cucumber can go under the rock!

Great idea! Plastic milk crate cut up. There should be plenty of holes for circulation and places for stuff to hide. Would a power head blowing under the rock do for a 110 gallon tank?
