Live Sand

If you buy the 20lbs bags of CaribSea Arag-Alive from your LFS it has a shelf life date on it. Usually about 12 months but go buy date on bag. Since they are packed in water don't open it until you are ready to place in tank.

If we are talking true LS with actual living creatures and bacteria in the bag I really dont think there is a shelf life of 12 months. I may be wrong but it just doesnt sound right. I would treat LS much in the same way I treated LR being shipped. The sooner you get it back in SW and at the proper temp the better off you are. Now, packaged dry sand from you LFS, that I would leave sitting around for a year.

Just a word here, even the shelf life doens't mean much, usually it's only a matter of bacteria that makes it live, cause pods don't live long in bagged water anyway. So even if you have had it open, you can keep it in a bucket and use old tank water to keep it live with bacteria.

I want to pull the cc out of my tank and put in sand.
Here is what I was thinking and tell me if I am being stupid or not.
I have two 40# bags of colorscape white san from oldcastle.
want to rinse that in saltwater several times to get all dirt and what not out.
In a rubber maid tub in the basement add one 20# bag of the live stuff from the LFS.
monitor water quality and cure till it is pure and then start the process of adding to the tank and removing the cc.
Will this cause my tank to cycle again?
And if I do half the cc replaced with sand one week and the other half another would that be better?
I am going to get sand in and cc out just want to do it smart.
All advice will be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

heck if you have the expenses.... put the fish in separate tank and do it all at once and wait for the small cycle to be done... use the tank water in QT
thats just me... i wouldnt want to risk the fish lives by upsetting some chemicals accidently in the CC

What about the corals in the tank. Would it not upset them too?
That is why I was thinking a small amount at a time. Or should I just QT everything.
Need a bigger QT for that. But did think about doing the fish in a QT.

What I'm doing is cleaning my cc weekly, very well. Moving the rock around and cleaning under them. I'm also taking some cc out when I do my waterchange, a few net fulls. My levels haven't changed, since the cc is cleaned before I move it out, thus nothing is released into my water. When I have all of the cc gone, I'll put in the sand.
So, clean the heck out of the cc, (I forcus on 1/3 of my 75gl at a time) then remove part of what you just cleaned. You'll need to move your lr around, it's yucky under rocks that haven't been moved in awhile.
I've found using a net to remove the cleaned cc doesn't make that much of mess and doesn't cloud the water.
Though, remember to watch for inverts when moving rocks....you don't want to smash something. I have two stars that are hanging out in the big pile of rocks in the middle of my tank...
