I was wondering how many inches everyone would recommend on a 180 gallon reef tank w/ LR. Thanks for your help.

I think most would say 1 1/2 to 2 inches... I have about 4 inches, but I have a lot of sand stirrers so buildup has not been an issue for me.

After reading the response I left, I would like to change the wording to 4 inch deep sand bed...

Thank you.

not too far off topic....would it be ok to add 2 inches of sand bed over a 4" crushed shell bed or should i just remove the shell bed? the tank has been cycling for a week already, should i just leave it? or just add a little over the top? thanks

Honestly, I would remove the crushed shell bed. It is a breeding ground for Nitrates and it would be better to go just sand.
As far as the original post asked I would do a 3 to 4 inch sand bed. Leaves room for the sand sifting critters.

after a little searching i see that SWF.COM has 2 types of live sand that are alot different in price, premium keys sand is 109$ for 40 lbs, where as natures ocean is only 50$ for 40 lbs. is the natures ocean a OK way to go? should i mix the 2? would that be better? thanks again :)
