It's actually beneficial for the fish. It can provide food and provides excellent filtration.

Live sand is usually less of a stress to fish then dead dry sand. It will settle much faster and will help keep your ammonia and nitrites absent. If you have a deep sand bed it can even lower nitrates.

I like to watch all the sandbed critters that hitchhike in when you add some live sand. That's how you can tell if your sand is really healthy by the amount of beneficial creatures you have living in it.
