I'am starting a new 55g reef i've asked a few questions and got some great reply's i was wondering if i should use lr or reefrock out of a box and do i need skimmer
Hey,
I'm not sure what you mean by reef rock. I think it's tufa or lace rock. It's great to use as a base for your reef. Saves a lot of cash that way. In your case you would want to put down about 50lbs of base rock and then stack your lr on top of that until you reach the total you want. I've got a 55gal tank with 50lbs of base rock and 70lbs of lr. Any exposed base rock will become lr over time and any lr that get covered up wont be "live" for very long. (There are some sponges and sea squirts that can live in these dead area's.)

If by reefrock what you mean is "dead" reef rock, then a combination will work well. The lr will propagate onto the other, and you will increase your bio filtration, making your tank very stable. Be sure to keep the calcium levels between 400-500 ppm to get the best coralline aglae (purple)growth, and definitely add a protein skimmer to pull the phosphates out of the water.
