I had a long horned cowfish and loved him! MIne was extremely personable. I had him in a 90 gallon FOWLR and his tank mates were a flame angel, coral beauty, flame hawk, bicolor angel, engineer goby, and a royal gramma. Feeding time was fun, he got excited as I approached the tank. If I took too long he would spit water at me. He also would follow your finger and travel back and forth trying to watch me work on the tank. I have been told that while they can release a toxin, it isn't all that common. I lost my fish after having him for a couple of years and he didn't release toxins and I never found his body. My husband says he witnessed the engineer burying something.. Could have been...

Could the travel from the lfs ,the acclimation and the putting him in the tank cause enough stress to release those toxins and can something the size of a dime release enough of it to wipe out a large tank she wants to put him in her 55 for now being he is small thanks again folks

I'm not an expert by any means. I would make sure the cowfish is eating before I brought him home. Mine didn't show any stress moving him to my tank...hopefully someone with a lot more knowledge will respond to you. That was my experience and it was a pleasant one. Good luck.

first full grown size it can reach 18.1 inches:eek: . and when that size it needs an extreamly large system and has trouble with powerheads and competion with food.and is also a very clumsy and weak swimmer.
if you get it be ready to up grade (when it grows) and full fill all its needs!
good luck

I've benn thinking about getting one too and I asked one of the guys at my LFS and he said that they do but one usually checks their tank enough that your tank wouldn't be wipped out unless it was left in the tank dead for like a week.

We bought one today. We have him alone in a smaller tank. Go to your search and type in cow fish and there is a really cool website just for cowfish that explains alot.
I'm a country girl stuck in the city so this is the only cow my husband will let me have

She seems to be doing really good. She's been eating and follows your every move in and out of the room.

thanks everyone for all of your help as usual I knew I could count on my fellow board members to give some advice. I will most definitly have her read more about it before she goes out an gets it.
Thanks again:)

Hey so pretty much this is the cutest fish ever. Mine is still very small and all he does is inspect EVERYTHING in my tank. Everyone that sees him loves him. My problem is that he keeps getting sucked up next to my bio filter...it's becoming a problem cause every couple minutes or so i have to release him from the vacuum. Does anyone else have a problem with this? I'm considering wrapping some cloth around the filter until i find a better idea. Can anyone please help?

I had a cowfish that i bought a few months ago. He never thrived in my tank. I think that he was just too stressed in the beginning, which brought on ick, he never would eat much for me, then he got stuck in some live rock and by the time i got him out he was done for. I was very sad. A friend of mine ordered him and only had him a couple days before i bought him...so maybe he was too stressed out from all the moving around.
