I wanted to get a longnoes hawkfish. Any suggestions what to keep with them. If you feed them good will they still eat your crabs and snails?
What about a large cleaner shrimp I already have.
Would appreciate any feedback on this fish and habits.
Thanks.

i dont think they can eat snails and the only crabs that i would think they could eat would be hermits and thats it they can get threw the shell.
i dont know if it will kill the cleaner might nip at it but im not sure ive been debating myself if i should get one or not. im worried about my mated pair of cleaner shrimp.

I REALLY want one, but I'm pretty certain that they more than likely WILL eat shrimp. I'm not taking a chance. I don't think either of you should either, assuming you really like your shrimp.

They don't usually bother anything that is in there prior to them. You can find longnoses pretty small. If your shrimp is larger than him then he will not likely bother it. If it is not a risk that you are willing to take then don't.

Wow... Really??
Thats news to me. I thought it was one of those things where majority of ppl have the problem, and like 5% have sucess keeping them together.
I think I might just get one now. I really like the longnoses.
Thanks sep

Yeah you should be just fine! The person I am gettiing my tank from has had a longnose hawkfish with a cleaner shrimp and plenty of hermits for awhile with no problems or even niping so from my stand piont you should be good!

before my longnose jumped out of the tank and died it was my favorite fish. it will never touch crabs or snails.. but it will attack shrimp if they are to small. A large shrimp 'should' be ok
It would sometimes dive bomb the cardinal fish but other then that it was peaceful, even with seahorses.

My hawk hurt one shrimp. I had ticked him off. I was moving my display, and moved all of the inverts and rock into my QT. It came time to catch Sir Quizzy (The hawk in my Avatar). I put him into the tank and he was mad! He bit a piece of the tail of my shrimp. A few mins later, when I was close to the tank checking on them, he sucked a hermit out of it's shell and spit it back out. That was interesting to watch. He was mad, quite obviously. The shrimp was fine on the next molt. He checks out all new fish and inverts. He can be a butt head to new guys though.
