Hey all, i have a 55 gallon tank on a wood tank stand.. i'm looking to upgrade my fish tank when i have to move it after a remodel of the house. i don't want to go too crazy, so i would like to keep my stand...and upgrade the tank to a larger one. does anyone know of a taller tank that will fit on my stand? it's your normal glass 55 gallon tank. thanks for any help out there..

not really .why so worried about keeping the stand?i would sell the set up and get me a 150 or 180.i had a 150 for years and loved it.i gave it to a friend who turned it into a freshwater and got me a 250.imo a 180 is the perfect sized tank.this 250 is so hard to work on especially getting to the bottom.but its impressive looking .still i miss the 150

well, i'm dropping about 20K into a remodel of my garage, new den/computer room/ fish tank room.... and the wife doesn't want me to spend any more then i have to. u know?!?!? lol so i wanted to get larger, but do'nt want to go crazy. my brother in law has a 125 and i would love to go that size, but the misses wouldn't... i want to take up the same space, but a lil bit bigger.. but i still have a few months till i get to move the tank. and get rid of a few pest fish that can't catch without taking everyhting out.

then you still have a few months to convince the wife. IMO even if you could find a larger tank with a similar footprint i dont think it would be worth it. going too tall can make service a PITA and also affects light penetration. i was never a fan of the footprint of 55 gallon tanks: the 4' length makes it seem like you have a larger tank than you do because of the 12" depth. see if you can swing at least a 75. the extra 6" in depth can be a game changer when it comes to aqua-scaping. hell man, if your dropping 20 grand, what's another 2 stacks on a clutch 125. i went from a 55 to a 125- probably the best decision i made... if only i'd have gone from 55 to 220....

A 55 gallon tank BITES!!!!!!!!!!
I should know, since I have one. If I could do it all over, I would have opted for the wider tank.

So a wise person told me long ago, "buy the biggest tank you can afford and manage to take care of." So i bought a 20g because I was new to the hobby. Then I bought a 29g. Then I bought a 40g. Then I bought a 55g. I finally understood! The want to make your tank bigger will always exist, so go big early. All that money spent on those tanks could have payed for one big tank. I'm back at a 40 currently and have had it for about 5 years, but I am working towards a bigger tank. This time it will be 250-300g so hopefully that will satisfy me.

If your wife doesnt want you to go with a 125, I would go for a 90. JMO
