anything that uses photosynthesis to grow(plants, algea in corals) uses blu or red light spectrum....red light doesnt penetrate water as deep as blue and is absorbed after couple meters(depending on clarity of water) ....hence the blue light needed for zooxanthellae(algea in corals). the zooxanthellae also absorb red but it is only available to the corals before the the red wavelength is absorbed so blue is what most corals recieve. this is also thought to be the reason for animals that live deeper in ocean to have red pigment because it makes them harder to see ....impossible to see without light source under the water....for protection.
