I was wondering what was more important on getting good close up pictures with a digital camera. Is it the megapixels, digital zoom or optical zoom? Any suggestions under $400..... any help would be appreciated, thanks.

What you want for good close-up shots are:
MACRO- The better the macro mode, the closer you can get to the actual subject. I would look for a camera that will allow you to focus down to at least 8 inches or less.
Optical Zoom- The better the optical zoom.......the further you will be able to stay away from the subject and still bring it close. Look for at least a 3x optical. 4x - 6x optical zooms are good but, I wouldn't go too much above that unless you have a tripod.
Digital Zoom- Not very good......it works in some cases but, decreases quality quite a bit. Don't worry about the digital zoom.
Megapixels- The higher the MP, the better the quality enlargements can be. If you plan on printing the photos.......get the highest resolution you can afford.
Buy name brand- Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Pentax, Minolta, and some Sony's are good. I would stay away from brands like: HP, Epson, Toshiba, Casio, etc.. Camera companys will always make a better camera than computer companys.
