FYI, Raccoons are nocturnal animals and any time you see one during the day there is a good possibility that it is injured or sick (rabies). I’d recommend you leave it alone.

I know they are nocturnal and about the rabies thing. But it wasnt growling or anything and its just a baby. I think it must have gotten seperated from its mother because we found a dead raccoon by the creek the other day.
I thought about calling animal control, but Im afraid to touch it and it has already started back toward the woods. Its long gone, but if it does come back, I know someone who is involved in some wildlife rescue program

Well, we scooped him up with a blanket and put him in a box, and the Wildlife Rehibilitation people are coming over to pick it up

i had a pet squirrel for like a year, i saw him fall out of a tree and he was only like 5 inches long, so i took him home, rehabbed him and kept him. he was reaaly cool stayed very tame the whole time. i just let him wander the house. after about a year i built a sqirrel box in a tree in my yard and he would be at the window ledge evertime i was in the kitchen because he knew right when i saw him he would be getting some walnuts, i even would somtimes let him in for a litte while and mess with him then let him back out and hed go right back up into his tree. but around breeding season he started biting and was no longer tame but i would still put out nuts for him, hed still come eat em but slowly he satrted showin up less and less, then i never saw him again

sorry, kind of a touchy subject for me

I was sad to see it go. It was just the cutest thing! It was so weak it could barely walk because it had been without its mother fir a couple of days. Apparently one of my other neighbors had seen it walking around for a couple of days
I once had a pair of baby, like days old, flying squirrels! They were in a tree that was being cut down and the mom ran away. So we took them home and hand fed them for a while. Eventually we turned them over to the wildlife center or something like that

Sounds like you did the right thing.
Dang, all you cynical people... it's a baby animal... she took care of it. Being careful is good, but you can help out with minimal risk.

I dont think anyone was being cynical... just concerned for the well being of BOTH her and the animal...
you did the right thing JACKnJILL... kudos to you

Awh he's cute. Good Job! baby animals don't know any better, all they know is mom and food..he was looking for his mom..they are helpless when that small and can't survive, catch food yet on their own. It is not unusual to see nocturnal (baby) animals in the day time. We had a family of opossums living under the shed..the mother got hit by a car and the babies came out a couple of days later looking for food & mom, they didn't care that we were human, they just needed someone to feed them. My dad used to rescue animals all the time..he had a fawn, only one week old living in the garage until someone from animal control could pick her up..he lives in an area where Bear come right up on the porch..so he kept her in the garage. She was there about a week, he fed her goats milk and the animal people said she was fat and healthy.

I had a friend (nickname Pony) who saved a baby bird who had a broken wing or something like that....he nursed it back to health and kinda had it trained to sit on his shoulder while he sat on his deck...then one day while they were hanging out after work the bird pecked him in the eye...he almost lost his eye (2 surgeries and thousands of dollars of lost income)....now when he told us the story we asked where he buried the bird.... but being the guy he was he just set it free.....now we call him pecker head pone...I prolly would have killed it if it poked me in the eye after saving it's life and nursing it back to health...

Good thing you found him. Now he will have a chance to grow up!! A friend of mine moved up from Key Largo where she used to rescue coons.... She's now doing the same in central FL. Alot of work goes into rearing coons... They have to be fed frequently.

jilly, that's the cutest thing ever!!! I love baby animals, i don't care what kind!
I was at my cousin's college graduation party a while ago, and a baby skunk wandered into the back yard with us... all of his friends and our family were drunk, so they weren't thinking straight. They started feeding it pieces of spiked watermelon (for those of you who don't know, you punch a hole in the skin of the watermelon, and put a bottle of vodka on it upside down until it's all gone)... it was funny, but i'm not sure what happened to the skunk... it stumbled away after it's 5th or 6th piece... I hope it was ok...
