I have noticed alot of the dark red coraline algae in my tank. The only thing different is a new light bulb, will this create this coraline algae??
Quite pretty and looks like velvet is this okay to have in a tank??

im afraid thats not coraline and its probably cyano.. especially if it looks like velvet.. very bad for your tank, do a search on cyano or cyano bacteria and youll find out alot about it, including pics

If you can wipe it off it is cyno, not good to have in your tank. You may need more flow or turn over.

No I don't believe it is cyano, had that once when I first started. This stuff is very hard that has to be chipped off.
I see lots of pics of mostly pink coraline algae but mine is a deep red.
There is non of this on the sand bed either just on my live rock.
I was just curious as to the color of it being such a deep red and if this is normal.

My understanding is that you can have several colors of coralline. I have the same thing in my tank and I also have purple and green coralline as well. I wouldn't worry about it.

If you have to chip it, it's not cyano. I love the dark blood red coraline, got a pic?

I am going to upload 5 pictures of the algae. The first two are without a flash and show how dark it really is and the other three are with a flash. The full tank shot also has this algae on the back of the glass too. Pictures are not great but give you an idea of what I am talking about.

I just did not know if the really dark red was a good thing. THe pics with the flash do not do it justice but when I look at the tank it is such a dark blood red. Pretty neat though.

I have lots of the very dark red too, along with some true purple patches. I hear its good to have both, no problems here. Here are examples of both colors from my tank. Warren
