Loud powerheads

RIO's on a wavemaker???You are reallly asking for trouble. These powerheads/pumps are well known for not restarting and burning up...If they are already clicking opon restart, then you are close to a disaster. It could be that they just need a REAL good dismantle and cleaning. But knowing what I know about RIO's,You should replace them with another brand.

They are brand new, I just put them in yesterday. I guess I will replace them slowly, the whole setup is new and all I have is water and sand, so if one fails it's no big deal for now.
Is it possible they will get smoother after they are "broken in"?

About the sump being too small: I only have it to hide equipment, I thought 125G was a large enough body of water to keep problems related to small tanks under control. I bought the set-up used and the sump seems to be an old Amiracle filter of some sort that was converted to a sump. I have room in it for the skimmer, back-up heater (it gets cold in northern IL) and a funky looking canisister type thing that can be used for floss, carbon, etc.
I do plan on adding an above the tank refuge soon, maybe 15 gallons or so.
Thank you for all the replies, although I wasted money on the RIO's, I now know where to go for information first!! :)

Even though you are only putting your equiptment down in your sump, i think you are doing you tank an injustice. your return pump will only put out 400 gph at four feet of head. that mean you are only turning your tank over 3.2 times an hour. That is not nearly enough. I see too that you have the Fuval 404 which is only rated for a 100 gallon tank. If i were you i would serious reconsider what you have an look at building a large sump (50-70 gallons) and get rid of the canister filter. I would also put a large pump (mak 5 by GenX) and toss the rio as a return pump. Just my thoughts.

I use a sump to put my heater in, attach my protien skimmer to, add suppliments in, and increase the water volume of my tank. You don't need one, but alot of people use them.

Now I am confused, if all that is "required" with a DSB and lots of LR is a skimmer, why does the turnover rate matter? Is it because the skimmer will not have access to the proper amount of water to do it's job?
I would love to have a larger sump, but the poorly designed stand I have would've had to have built around the sump (something I will remember for my next tank!), I can possibly get a 20 gallon under there, but that's about it.
I will have to put some pics of my sump on a website, like I said it's kind of like a gutted trickle filter.
Thanks again for the suggestions and help.

The reason for the turnover I believe of for current in your tank, you actually should be ok with those maxi jets in your tank, but I'd like a higher rate in and out of my sump.
I have the same 4 maxi's in my 125 and a 30 gal sum and 30 gal refugium under my tank.
something to consider is what happens if you lose power. The water will drain out of your lines from and returning to your tank flooding that little sump.
I definitally wouldn't go with less then a 20 gal under your tank IMO
HTH,
