lower power MH bulbs in higher power ballasts?

Can a lower power lamp, say 175W be run on a 250W or 400W ballast? The idea being that you could use the lower wattage lamps until you upgrade to a larger tank needing the higher power light?

I don't think so. I know that you *can* overdrive flourescent bulbs but it decreases their useful lifespan. I don't think the same is true of MH bulbs, I think you'd blow the bulb.
