lowering nitrates

My nitrates seem to stay aroung the 40 range. Nitrites and amonia are both at 0. I do 20% water changes every 2 weeks. I checked water I'm using and it doesn't really contain any nitrates. My lfs just told me he hates wet/dry filters because all the bio-balls create high nitrates in the water and told me to gradually take the bio-balls out of my wet/dry and just throw in a couple of pieces of live rock instead. (I currently have 60#s live rock in my 75 gal) Has anyone out there every done this?

Put activated carbon or phosguard in those compartments ...if you are going to put live rock somewhere make it in the tank so you can see it...plus I dont think that those compartments would hold enough rock to do any good
