Is it ok to put Ice into my saltwater tank. I live in Las Vegas and it's getting pretty hot. The temp is rising pretty close to 80. What is the best way to lower the tanks temperature.
thanks in advance,
DD

80 is ok for saltwater tanks. If it goes above 82 then IMO you need to keep it cooler. Even 82 isnt critical. Unless your going from 78-82, then thats a problem. I keep mine 79-80. You can use a small clip on fan aimed at the surface of the water to cool the tank down a bit. OR you can freeze some bottles of water and put them in your sump. OR put ice cubes in a bag and float it in the tank. OR you can just buy a chiller. You DO NOT want to bring the temp down too fast. You wanna try and prevent more than a 2 degree rise and fall within a 24 hour period.

You can put ice in your tank; use a ziplock bag so the tap water in the ice does not enter your aquarium. Be very careful that you do not put too much in that the temperature drops too significantly that the heater cannot keep up. It will be quite a balancing act.
It would be easier to position a cheap fan to blow against the water to promote evaporative cooling, however, this will only keep the tank temperature at whatever the ambient temperature is.
You can buy a window air conditioner to keep in the room the tank is in to cool it down also assuming there is a window in that room.

I agree with Drew, if it hits 82 you need to take action, but do not lower the temperature too fast.
