all stony corals with few exceptions are meat eaters (they all likely filter feed as well). SPS require much smaller sized particles such as larvae or very small copepod species.
the main distinction that classifies a stony coral as one or the other is LPS grows its stony structure externally (fleshy area grows up from the base but does not grow over the hard structure) and SPS hard structure is internal (fleshy part covers the hard structure).
