LR Diatom/snail question

OK, had a huge diatom outbreak, all levels are good for a new tank. Think i'm on the down hill slide. Added 6 snails, three turbo and three of the bigger ones, forget there name.
They are loving life and eating very well I guess from a snails point of view.
Question, when they are eating off my "LR" they leave the rock looking bleach white. Is the rock "alive" or did I get screwed over by LFS? Just doesn't resemble any pictures I have looked at of other peoples tanks.
Thoughts?

if they sold you live rock its most likley alive. Mine was bleached white too at that point. It will take a while but the coraline will build up and make it all pretty
